Why does my lentil soup recipe ask that I rinse the dry lentils that come in a bag?

I think I understand rinsing the canned beans, but why the dried ones too?Why does my lentil soup recipe ask that I rinse the dry lentils that come in a bag?
Just to be sure to rinse off any ';funk'; that you don't want to be in the final dish......Just put them in a fine mesh strainer and run them under cold water for a minute or two......AND CHECK FOR ANY SHRIVELED LENTILS OR ROCKS OR BITS OF DIRT........Sometimes, as careful as they are at the packing plant, sometimes things 'slip thought the cracks' and end up in the bag.......

I didn't do that once, and a grey foam formed on the surface of the soup.

Rinsing is good, gets the dust off.
Dang! Le Cordon Bleu guy beat me again. Why would you want my answer when you have one from Le Cordon Bleu?
This is to remove any dirt left over from the washing they give the beans but more importantly it is also a chance for you to search for any stones that may be in with the beans. It happens now and then, stones getting past the screening system they go through. Sucks when you bite down into a stone!
to take off dust dirt bugs etc
They don't mean cleaning you lentil, they mean you have to water them over night. Then the letils take water and they get soft by cooking. There is another method. You can cook them for one hour in a pressure pot.

Of course you should wash your lentils before watering.

wow,, do you have the wires crossed...

drain the canned beans

rinse the dried beans to elimanate any dirt or other matter.
to get rid of the lentil dust
to remove any debris that might make soup cloudy
Wash rice too.

Probably to clean all the dead insect debris that was gathered up in harvesting the food.
Because there is dirt on the beans. It's a raw agriculture product, and has been minimally processed. Also, they may be dusted with diatomaceous earth to keep the microscopic critters off the beans.
Get off the dust and dirt....not too complicated to figure out yourself.
my mom always rinsed and sometimes soaked her beans, lentils navy kidney even black eye peas all from dry. maybe it cleans off any residue from packaging better safe....
To remove random dirt and with other beans like navy beans possible pebbles.
They may contain dust, soil particles and plant residue
To remove any impurities.
Any bean or pea dried have dust particle and dirt on them. Maybe some insecticides used!!
Don't rinse the canned bean, but DO rinse the dried beans. They are dirty and sometimes filled with soil or sand. You should also look for rocks because they come to you from the growing fields. :o)

By the way, if you rinse the canned beans, you are throwing away the vitamins and seasonings. Canned items were washed in the old days, but today's products are much safer.
because in the store since the bag has breathing holes in it

it gets breathed on by sickly people

plus they need to be moisterized
cause there can still be sand in them since they're grown in really sandy soil. Just to make sure there's none left so it doesn't get in your food.
to rid the powdery dust that maybe on them
